Statement from Congressman John W. Olver on Saturday, October 24, 2009,
International Day of Climate Action

I would like to offer my support and thanks to all of you who came out today to support the goals of 350’s International Day of Climate Action.  If we are going to succeed in significantly lowering the carbon dioxide in our atmosphere it is imperative that we have people like you to spread the message.  As you know, in June the House of Representatives passed historic comprehensive climate change legislation that will cap the United States ’ output of carbon and make significant strides in supporting renewable energy technologies and the greening of our economy.  However, domestic legislation is just one part of the picture.

We have an incredible opportunity coming up in December in Copenhagen to mobilize a true international effort in the fight against global warming.  It is necessary that the world’s leaders understand that there is strong support for the most effective and far-reaching treaty possible.  Through your efforts, you bring to light the desire of the American people and people across the globe to change the way we treat our environment.  I assure you that I will continue to support strong action to limit our carbon output and do everything I can to make sure that the United States supports the strongest possible treaty and lets the world know that America is finally serious about combating global climate change.
